After finishing my MSEE at CCNY in 2001 I taught courses in UNIX and electronics. It is a challenge to get students excited about the things that the instructor is excited about. Nevertheless I continue to advocate UNIX here at CCNY since I think it is a realm where good engineering has been the norm for decades. In my mind there is a connection between art and engineering. Good engineering involves a harmony of parts and an elegance in how it interacts with the surroundings. Bad engineering ignores the surroundings, and tends to be wasteful and unharmonious. Bad engineering makes the world an ugly place. For example, declining software efficiency causes frequent hardware upgrades. Computers go in the trash and new ones are manufactured at a tremendous cost to our environment. Good engineering is elegant and aware. Bad engineering is dumb, wasteful, and ugly.
