A few weeks ago, a Muslim friend of mine explained some of the reasons why Islamic culture is very different from American culture. One of the things that he focused on was the public image of women. He said that American culture takes away the dignity of women, objectifies then, and makes them appear, at best, sexy and like sluts that are cheap eye candy. He strengthened his point by asking me what it feels like to go for a walk with my mother or sister and to pass by all kinds of blatant sexual imagery. He assumed, correctly, that it makes me uncomfortable. My friend asserted that the fact that you wouldn't want your mother to be aware of something is a good indication that you shouldn't be doing it.
