There is a tiny restaurant on 139th Street just west of Amsterdam Avenue that is apparently named "Kaffe." The people who work there are all very nice and the customers who sit there and have coffee or food are also friendly. The espresso there is the best I've ever had. It is very dark and rich, with absolutely no bitterness.
