I am horrified by the amount of energy that gets wasted every day. Men identify too much with their machines. We buy cars with bigger engines than necessary because the power of the engine is an expression of the self-image of the man. Bitter, impotent men need to play power games. And this is evident in the computer world also. People spend a lot of money on powerful computers when they don't need them. Indeed, in almost every organization, the best PCs are on the desks of the people who least need them: the managers, supervisors, etc... I used to be a musician. My musician friends and I often remarked on the fact that people with fancy equipment tend to have less talent and less inspiration. The same is true with computers. Uninspired, frustrated, impotent men demand fancy computer equipment. You see, the phrase "my equipment" has special meaning for men. A man's equipment is a symbol of his place in the world. A man with last year's laptop feels personally cut down when he sees his colleague with the newest model. I don't know whether women have this psychological vulnerability. I would guess not. It is probably pretty well settled that men are more competitive than women. It just bothers me when men indulge their pathetic insecurities at the expense of the environment, and therefore against the interests of the other people on earth and the generations to come.
