In the course of using the services of various businesses, I
found it necessary to provide them with my email address. Of
course I could give them a fake email address, or maybe a
garbage email address, but usually I give one of my real
addresses. Many companies have the discipline to have my
email address, but somehow resist the temptation to spam me.
Other companies cannot resist, and they send spam. I am never
surprised to receive spam from pure spammers, but it is
worth noting that some companies that do other things than
spam, also spam on the side. Maybe they do it when their
business is not performing up to expectations and they feel
they have to sacrifice a bit of integrity to meet market pressures.
I use the standard definitition of spam: unsolicited bulk
email. For example, a company that sends email notices
of promotions to all customers, even though they never asked
to notified of promotions, is clearly a spammer.
Here is a partial list of companies that have spammed me:
- Greyhound Bus
- City College of New York
- Amazon
- Washington Deluxe Bus
- U-Haul
- Yahoo
- IEEE
- Apple
- Yelp
- AbeBooks
- NYU/Polytechnic University
- mydigitaldiscount.com
Here is a partial list of companies that could send spam,
but refrain from doing so. Thank you.
- Craigslist
- Amtrak
- Freshmeat
- eBay
